Trump signs law to detain illegal migrants accused of theft, burglary pre-trial

iNDICA NEWS BUREAU-

On Wednesday, January 29, U.S. President Donald Trump signed the Laken Riley Act, which requires pre-trial detention for illegal migrants accused of crimes like theft, burglary, or shoplifting.

The bill passed with a 263-156 vote in the House, with 46 Democrats supporting it, after the Senate approved it in a bipartisan 64-35 vote.

“This is a very important law, this is something that has brought Democrats and Republicans together. That’s not something that’s easy to do — Laken did it. America will never, ever forget Laken Hope Riley,” Trump said at the bill signing, calling it “a landmark law” that can “save countless innocent American lives”.

Trump praised the law as a significant achievement, uniting both Democrats and Republicans.

He honored Laken Hope Riley, a Georgia nursing student who was killed by a Venezuelan migrant who had been arrested for shoplifting before the attack. The migrant had been released into the U.S. on parole.

Trump thanked the Republicans and Democrats who voted in favor of the bill, warning those who opposed it that they would “be sorry”.

In addition to signing the Laken Riley Act, Trump also announced he would sign an executive order to prepare a 30,000-person migrant detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, directing the Department of Defense and Homeland Security to make the necessary arrangements.
