President Donald Trump announced that he plans to sign an executive order to create a facility at Guantanamo Bay to hold deported migrants.
The facility, located in Cuba, will have space for 30,000 people and will be used to detain migrants who are considered a threat to the U.S.
Trump explained that some migrants are too dangerous to be sent back to their home countries, so they will be kept at Guantanamo.
“We have 30,000 beds in Guantanamo to detain the worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people,” Trump said during an event to sign the Laken Riley Act into law.
“Some of them are so bad we don’t even trust the countries to hold them because we don’t want them coming back, so we’re going to send them out to Guantanamo,” Trump added. “This will double our capacity immediately. And tough, it’s a tough place to get out of.”
Guantanamo Bay is a U.S. military base that has been used to hold terror suspects, and it gained criticism for accusations of torture. There are currently 15 detainees there.
Trump’s executive order is part of his ongoing efforts to limit immigration.
His administration has already taken several steps to reduce refugee admissions, stop parole programs that allowed certain immigrants to enter the U.S., and halt an app that helped migrants schedule entry into the country.
Additionally, the Trump administration has moved to revoke the legal status of some migrants who entered the U.S. under Biden’s policies.
