The U.S. Army has announced a new policy that prohibits transgender individuals from enlisting and halts medical procedures related to gender transitions for service members.
In a statement shared on X, the Army confirmed that the decision is effective immediately. It stated that all new accessions from individuals with a history of gender dysphoria would be paused, and all medical procedures for facilitating or affirming gender transitions would be suspended.
The Army wrote in a series of posts on X, “The #USArmy will no longer allow transgender individuals to join the military and will stop performing or facilitating procedures associated with gender transition for service members. Stay tuned for more details.”
The statement further clarified, “Effective immediately, all new accessions for individuals with a history of gender dysphoria are paused, and all unscheduled, scheduled, or planned medical procedures associated with affirming or facilitating a gender transition for Service members are paused.”
This announcement follows President Donald Trump’s signing of four executive orders in late January that aim to reshape military policy. Among the orders, one reinstates a ban on transgender individuals serving in the U.S. military, which had been overturned by President Joe Biden in 2021.
The Army also emphasized in its statement that individuals with gender dysphoria who have volunteered to serve will continue to be treated with “dignity and respect”.
In a separate statement on January 27, Trump confirmed that he had signed four executive orders while traveling aboard Air Force One. These orders include banning transgender service members from the military and reinstating with back pay those who were discharged for refusing COVID-19 vaccinations.
Trump first implemented the transgender ban during his first administration in 2017, but Biden reversed it in 2021. Hours after being sworn in as the 47th U.S. President on January 20, Trump issued an order to revoke Biden’s move and reinstate the ban.
