A U.S. national of Indian origin was discharged two days after a robotic bariatric surgery was performed on her for being abnormally overweight and diabetic.
The surgery was performed on the day of her admission to a private hospital in Delhi, May 12 after being diagnosed with “morbid obesity with diabetes and metabolic syndrome.” She was discharged two days post her surgery.
The 44-year-old woman whose identity wasn’t disclosed has lost 17 lbs in the first 21 days since her surgery. When she came to the hospital for treatment, she weighed 112.4 kg [247.7lbs].
A statement released by the hospital stated the woman had been struggling with obesity-induced uncontrolled diabetes, hypothyroidism, hypertension, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and obstructive sleep apnea for the past seven years.
“Her condition had worsened in the past year and the traditional methods advised to her did not work. She has advised surgery in the US, but she opted for India,” the hospital statement said.
“With her condition deteriorating and other co-morbidities advancing, she consulted Dr Arun Prasad, senior consultant, GI, bariatric and robotic surgery, where she was recommended an immediate robot-assisted surgery that could help her reduce weight, so that other vitals like diabetes and hypertension could be stabilized,” it said.
“As she was unable to lose weight with traditional methods and resorted to either over-exercising or starving herself, which proved detrimental to her condition. Early symptoms revealed the obesity had caused other conditions like diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, hypertension, GERD and obstructive sleep apnea, to flare up and cause additional complications,” the surgeon Prasad said.
Prasad said after the surgery her condition has improved. “Vital parameters like blood sugar levels are normal. Her obstructive sleep apnea disorder too has improved,” Prasad said.
Robot-assisted bariatric surgery was planned, where specialized robotic staplers are used for a seamless surgery.
“This procedure could be less painful with less cuts and wounds and promises better recovery in comparison to other traditional modalities. After a routine check-up, she was admitted to the hospital and surgery was performed immediately on the day of admission to avoid any further delay in the treatment,” the statement said.
A sedentary lifestyle has become the root cause of many non-communicable diseases now-a-days. People should indulge in some kind of physical exercise and healthy eating on daily basis, doctors said.
The bariatric treatment can be a measure for decreasing the weight and obesity, but it should be managed by combining lifestyle interventions and dietary modifications, as a whole, they said.
