Vedant Patel, first Indian American to hold Daily Press Briefing at the USDOS

Indian American, Vedant Patel, who is the Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State achieved a major milestone when he conducted the Daily Press Briefing at the US Department of State on September 6.

Patel tweeted after the briefing: “Hosted my first Daily Press Briefing at the podium today. The Briefing is an important way we stay accountable to U.S. citizens and helps protect our democracy. You have a right to know about the events and policies that shape your life.”

Patel previously served as an Assistant Press Secretary and Spokesperson for President Biden in The White House. Prior to this he served as a spokesperson on the Presidential Inaugural Committee and the Biden-Harris Transition.

Patel also held communications positions on the Biden Campaign both in the primary and general election. Previously, Patel worked as Communications Director to Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal and Communications Director to Congressman Mike Honda. Patel is a graduate of the University of California – Riverside and received a M.B.A. from the University of Florida. He is originally from San Jose, California.

Matt Hill, Senior Associate Communications Director at the White House tweeted to congratulate Patel: “Kudos to @StateDeputySpox Vedant Patel on his podium debut! Representing the United States on the world stage is a huge responsibility, and Vedant did it with the utmost professionalism and clear communication.”

The 33-year-old Patel from California got the chance to interact with media persons on wide-ranging topics on foreign policy issues of the US because the State Department Spokesperson Ned Price is on leave.

At the Foggy Bottom headquarters of the State Department Patel spoke on issues ranging from Russia’s Ukraine invasion, Iranian nuclear issue and Liz Truss taking over as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

In his opening remarks which set the tone for the press briefing on Tuesday, September 6, Patel said: “We congratulate Liz Truss on becoming the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The UK and the US are the closest of friends and allies, and we look forward to continuing our close cooperation with Prime Minister Truss and the new government on a range of important priorities, including continued support to Ukraine in the face of Russia’s war, and preserving peace, and economic security, and the rule of law in the Indo-Pacific.”
