Veteran actress Shabana Azmi sustained serious injuries after an accident at Mumbai-Pune expressway on Saturday. The accident took place in the afternoon on January 18 afternoon in Maharashtra’s Raigad district. At around 3.30 pm near Khalapur, over 60 km from Mumbai, the car in which she was traveling rammed into a truck, India Today said in a report.
Shabana Azmi and husband Javed Akhtar were travelling from Pune to Mumbai when their Tata Safari hit a truck. The SUV was severely damaged as a result of the impact. Shabana Azmi and her driver were both injured in the accident and were rushed to the MGM Hospital in Panvel. Javed Akhtar, who was also in the car, was not injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished the actress a speedy recovery. He wrote on Twitter, “The news of @AzmiShabana Ji’s [Shabana Azmi] injury in an accident is distressing. I pray for her quick recovery.”
According to doctors, she has suffered head-injury and there was slight damage to backbone, reported The Times of India.
Shabana Azmi recently celebrated the 75th birthday of her husband and veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar. The two were spotted in various parties hosted in honor of Javed’s special day.
After Shabana Azmi was shifted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, film stars rushed to the hospital to pay her a visit. Javed Akhtar’s son Farhan, along with girlfriend Shibani Dandekar, reached the hospital minutes after the veteran actress was admitted the hospital. Tabu, Tina Ambani, Anil and Sunita Kapoor also paid a visit to the actress.
Shabana, daughter of noted Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi, graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in 1973 and signed on to Khwaja Ahmad Abbas’ film ‘Faasla’ and began work on Kanti Lal Rathod’s ‘Parinay’ as well. Her first release, however, was Shyam Benegal’s directorial debut ‘Ankur’ in 1974.
