The Embassy of India organized and celebrated the 10th International Day of Yoga at the picturesque Wharf, overlooking the Potomac River in Washington D.C. Sunday, June 16.
The event began with Indian classical dance performances, invoking prayers for learning. “The Yoga session highlighted the spirit of oneness and harmony inspired by the ancient Indian practice of Yoga,” read an official news release.
The program included elements to popularize inclusion of millets, and environment friendly products and practices in daily life, keeping up with this year’s theme of “Yoga for Self and Society”, emphasizing the need for holistic and balanced living.
Ambassador Sripriya Ranganathan, Charge d’affaires, recalled the recognition of Yoga’s universal appeal ten years ago, on 11 December 2014. She said the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga. The draft resolution establishing the International Day of Yoga was proposed by India and endorsed by a record 175 member states.
Ambassador Ranganathan noted that since its inception in the Indus Valley Civilization, the timeless practice of Yoga has travelled far and wide, and now millions around the world practice Yoga. She also expanded on this year’s theme, noting that Yoga illuminates the path to create harmony and balance that creates a brighter future for society.
In the run up to IDY 2024, several curtain raiser events have been organized by the Embassy and Consulates across the United States of America with the active participation and support of numerous community organizations and Yoga enthusiasts.
Countdown begins in SF for 10th Yoga Day
A vibrant celebration of yoga’s global journey unfolded at the Consulate General of India in San Francisco, Wednesday, June 19. The curtain raiser marked the countdown to the 10th International Day of Yoga.
Over 200 enthusiasts, including representatives from diverse Yoga schools and Indian organizations, gathered for a session. The Consul General highlighted Yoga’s profound impact worldwide, emphasizing its role in promoting physical well-being and mental harmony.
The Indian Consulate has urged enthusiasts to join them on 21 June at Crissy Field, San Francisco at 9 am to celebrate 10th Yoga day.
