The National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru has been honored with the Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion for 2024 by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Established by WHO in 2019, the Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion acknowledges individuals, institutions, and organizations that have made significant contributions to health promotion. This year, NIMHANS has been recognized for its contributions to the mental health sector.
NIMHANS the country’s premier mental health institution has been a leader in mental health and neurosciences, noted for its innovative research, education, and patient care. The institute has implemented forward-thinking mental health programs that cater to diverse populations. It has integrated mental health care into general health care, developed community-based strategies, and pioneered digital health interventions, gaining global recognition for its efforts.
The award comes at a significant time for NIMHANS as it is celebrating its 50th anniversary and the 70th anniversary of its predecessor, the All India Institute of Mental Health (AIIMH). This dual milestone highlights the institute’s rich legacy and continuous evolution in mental health and neurosciences.
Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya congratulated NIMHANS, calling the award “a recognition of India’s efforts in inclusive healthcare.” Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra also expressed his joy at the recognition, praising NIMHANS for its pioneering work in mental health.
NIMHANS director Pratima Murthy, who received the award at the 77th World Health Assembly in Geneva on Friday, May 31, said, “This award is not only a recognition of our past and present achievements but also a validation of the enduring legacy and vision that has guided NIMHANS since its inception. It reinforces our resolve to continue our mission of promoting mental health and well-being, making a tangible difference in the lives of those we serve.”
