The Center for American Progress announced that Neera Tanden will rejoin CAP as its new president and CEO.

“This is a moment where the Center for American Progress is more important than ever. There is a competition of ideas in the country. And this time calls for both a strong critique of the Trump administration’s policies and the development of an alternative agenda to solve the country’s problems,” said CAP Board Chair John Podesta.

Tanden served as domestic policy adviser to President Biden, where she led policy development for the president across domestic policy issues and directed the White House Domestic Policy Council. Previously, she was senior adviser and staff secretary at the White House, where she oversaw the decision-making process for the president on all issues, including national security, domestic policy, and economic policy.  Tanden was previously the president and CEO of the Center for American Progress and the Center for American Progress Action Fund. She also served in the Obama and Clinton White Houses and had senior roles in Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaigns as well as her staff as First Lady. She has a J.D. from Yale Law School and a B.S. from UCLA.

“CAP’s work has been central to developing an agenda across economics, domestic policy, and foreign policy that has been adopted by leaders in the broad center-left, as CAP did when it proposed policy frameworks that led to the Affordable Care Act and a plan to end the Iraq War. Those ideas were picked up in the campaign and presidency of Barack Obama. And later, its ideas on climate investments were adopted and implemented by President Joe Biden. And I can think of no one better to lead CAP at this moment than Neera Tanden, who has worked in three White Houses and led CAP as it worked to defeat Trump’s repeal of the ACA,” Podesta added.

“I’m thrilled to join the Center for American Progress, with its talented leaders across multiple issues, at this critical moment in history. As CAP has done before, it will develop an agenda to build a resilient coalition and take on the Trump administration’s assault on core American values and its harm to Americans from all walks of life,” Neera Tanden said.
